The Opinionated Machine

For years, humanity has been dreaming of the day when our creation will finally become like us: conscious and intelligent. If we cannot reach a consensus concerning human consciousness, how can we expect to define the point at which a machine is conscious? The important question we should be wondering is, “when we finally create AI, will we even know it happened?”

What is it that makes people so special? Is it even a tangible characteristic that we hold so dear? Is it our ability to perceive our environment? If so, my smartphone has a camera and a microphone that save sensory data to the phone’s memory, to be processed and used at a later time. However, I don’t try to claim that my phone can experience any sort of consciousness.

What is it that our consciousness allows us to do? Of course, we can store memories of sensory data, but what we do with that data is what makes us so special-or not so special. We use our sensory data to form opinions about the circumstances within which we find ourselves. We don’t necessarily store the entirety of a memory’s data-only the opinion, or plan of action, that we devised for dealing with that particular set of circumstances. It is our ability to form opinions, based upon sensory data, that sets us apart from other animals-or does it?

Knowing that the average dog has constructed a set of cause/effect protocol that come into direct conflict with its own instinctive behaviors means that we are not alone in our ability to form and use opinions. In fact, using this line of reasoning, one could conclude that a human fetus is less human than the common canine. Though a human embryo may be genetically superior to a mature German Shepard, all it can boast is potential, for it is not collecting and processing/storing sensory data, and is-therefore-not conscious, but that is a tangent for another article.

Comparing dogs to humans, to computers, or to human fetuses can seem like a slippery slope, but the reality is quite the contrary. We constantly talk about how smart or stupid our pets are. We have “smart”phones, “smart”bombs, and even SmartWater (which actually does nothing to guide itself). It is about time we take all this talk of intelligence and consciousness, and stuff it into a computer to see what comes out.

With enough data points, anything can be replicated. For the next few years, humanity will continue on the task of observing, recording and replicating the numerous processes that our minds use in creating this conscious experience. Once all the pieces are together, will it think? Once it starts thinking.
